Selling & flips

Selling and flipping: big-ticket buys that help a home sell

We may earn a commission if you buy through links on this page.

Selling within a few years, or flipping? The best big purchases are the ones buyers at your price point expect to see, at a cost the sale can carry. Here are the main areas, the models worth shortlisting, and a payback calculator built on national Cost vs. Value data.

Buy right once: Spend where buyers look and appraisers count, at the tier your neighborhood sells at. A matching mid-priced kitchen, sound systems with paperwork and curb appeal beat one showpiece upgrade.

Before you buy, check:

  • What updated homes near you sold for, and what they included
  • Existing gas, 240V, vent and water hookups
  • Permits and warranty registrations to hand to the buyer

Pre-sale project payback (Cost vs. Value)

Pick the projects you're weighing and see the national average cost, the value added at sale and the share recouped.

How it works: Sums Zonda's 2025 Cost vs. Value national average job cost and value at sale for each project you check; share recouped = value ÷ cost. Regional notes come from the same report. National averages hide big local differences.

Estimate only; confirm with your installer or the manufacturer.
