Refrigerator and Freezer Buying Guide: French Door, Counter-Depth, Side-by-Side, Column and Garage Freezers
We may earn a commission if you buy through links on this page.
A full-size refrigerator runs from about $1,000 for a side-by-side to $8,000+ for a built-in column, and a garage-ready freezer adds $650 to $950. Here are the standout models by type, then what decides the right one for you: the opening you have, how deep you want it to sit, and how much your household stores.
Buy right once: A refrigerator usually runs 10 to 15 years, so size it for the household you'll have, not just this year's groceries. Measure the opening and the path into the kitchen first; most returns are fridges that don't fit or doors that can't open fully. If you buy in bulk or may later, plan room for a separate freezer instead of overbuying fridge space.
Before you buy, check:
- Opening width, height and depth, plus door-swing clearance next to walls
- Doorways, hallways and stairs on the delivery path
- A water line for the ice maker, and the garage temperature range if a freezer goes there

Sizing tools
Refrigerator capacity by household
How many cubic feet you need, and whether a second freezer makes sense.
How it works: Rule of thumb: about 4–6 cu ft of fresh-plus-freezer space per adult; 1–2 people 14–20, 3–4 people 20–26, 5+ 26–29; bulk buyers add a 5–15 cu ft freezer (about 4 cu ft holds a quarter beef).
Estimate only; confirm with your installer or the manufacturer.

Refrigerator fit checker (cutout, depth, door swing)
Enter your opening; see which picks fit and how far each sticks out past the counters.
How it works: Needs width ≥ fridge width + 1/4 in, height ≥ fridge height + 1 in (top airflow), and compares fridge depth (without handles) with the counter depth. Next to a wall, doors need extra room to swing past 90° so the drawers clear.
Estimate only; confirm with your installer or the manufacturer.

Delivery fit checker
Will it go through the door? Works for sofas, fridges, washers and anything boxy.
How it works: Straight in if the smallest of item height/depth is under the door width; on an angle if it is under the door diagonal √(width² + height²); length must also be under the diagonal to tip it in. Remove doors or feet for more room.
Estimate only; confirm with your installer or the manufacturer.

French door, side-by-side and more
French door fridges put the fresh-food section on top behind two doors and the freezer in a pull-out drawer below. They're the most popular style because the wide shelves fit party platters and sheet pans, and each door swings only half as far as a single door. 4-door models add a middle drawer you can set as fridge or freezer; the Samsung Bespoke RF29BB8600 calls it FlexZone and pairs it with 28.8 cu ft total.[6] Café's CVE28DP2NS1 4-door, a popular premium choice, is now listed as no longer manufactured, so check stock before planning around it.[5]
Side-by-side models split the case vertically, fridge on one side and a full-height freezer on the other. The narrow doors suit galley kitchens and islands close to the fridge, and you can reach frozen food at eye level. The trade-off is narrow shelves; a pizza box or a turkey may not fit. The Whirlpool WRS571CIHZ is a counter-depth side-by-side with ice and water in the door.[8]
Top-freezer and bottom-freezer models are the simplest and least expensive, and they're also the most efficient per cubic foot. They're a good choice for a rental, a basement second fridge or a small kitchen, though they're less common in remodels.
Column and built-in refrigeration separates the fridge and freezer into independent units installed in cabinetry. The Thermador Freedom T30IR905SP is a 30-inch fresh-food column that takes a custom cabinet panel; you pair it with a separate freezer column of your chosen width.[9] Columns let you size each half to how you cook, and they look built in, but you're buying two appliances and the cabinetry around them.
Standard depth vs counter-depth vs built-in
Standard kitchen counters are about 24 to 25 inches deep. A standard-depth fridge sticks out past them by 6 to 12 inches; the Samsung RF29BB8600 is 34.25 inches deep including its doors.[6] That depth buys capacity at the lowest price per cubic foot.
Counter-depth fridges are shallower so they sit nearly in line with the counter fronts, with only the doors proud. The LG LF26C6360S is a "counter-depth MAX" model at 29.125 inches deep that still fits 25.5 cu ft by using more height and thinner walls.[7] Expect to give up a few cubic feet compared with the same-width standard model, or to pay more for the same capacity.
Built-in and column models are designed to sit flush with 24-inch cabinets and take a panel or trim kit. They need an exact cutout (84 × 30 × 25 inches for the T30IR905SP), so they are usually planned with a cabinetmaker or kitchen designer.[9]
Which to choose: if the fridge sits next to a walkway or opposite an island, counter-depth gives back several inches of aisle and looks cleaner. If it's in a pantry alcove or a corner where depth doesn't matter, standard depth gives you the most food per dollar.
Capacity by household
A common rule of thumb is about 4 to 6 cu ft of fresh-food and freezer space per person, plus extra if you cook from scratch or buy in bulk.
| Household | Total capacity | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| 1–2 people | 14–20 cu ft | Counter-depth or top-freezer is usually plenty |
| 3–4 people | 20–26 cu ft | French door or counter-depth MAX |
| 5+ people or bulk shoppers | 26–29 cu ft | Standard-depth 4-door, or add a separate freezer |
Planning ahead: if kids are on the way, teenagers are coming up, or you're starting to buy meat in bulk, it's usually cheaper to add a chest or upright freezer in the garage than to buy the biggest fridge that fits the kitchen.
How to measure
- Opening: width at the narrowest point, height to the cabinet above, and depth to the counter front. Leave about 1 inch above and 1/8 to 1/2 inch at the sides for airflow, or follow the maker's installation guide.
- Doors: French doors need room to swing past 90 degrees so the crisper drawers can slide out. Next to a wall, check the maker's minimum side clearance.
- Path in: measure every doorway, hallway and stair turn. Most fridges can pass through a doorway with the doors removed; the case depth without doors is the number that matters.
- Floor: a full fridge can weigh 300 pounds or more, so check that the floor is level and solid.
Chest vs upright freezers
Chest freezers give the most storage per dollar and hold temperature well, because cold air doesn't spill out when you open the lid. Most are manual defrost, so plan to defrost once or twice a year. The Frigidaire FFCL1542AW is a 14.8 cu ft garage-ready chest with two baskets and a lock.[10] The downside is digging: items at the bottom are hard to reach, and they take more floor space.
Upright freezers work like a fridge with shelves and door bins, so you can see and reach everything. Frost-free models skip defrosting. The Frigidaire FFUE2022AW is a 20 cu ft frost-free upright that takes about 33 inches of floor width.[11] Uprights cost more per cubic foot and can lose a bit more cold air each time the door opens.
How much freezer you need: about 1.5 cu ft per person for normal use, and more for hunters, gardeners or anyone buying a quarter or half beef. A quarter beef typically needs about 4 cu ft.
Garage-ready freezers and climate
Standard freezers and fridges are designed for indoor temperatures. In an unheated garage, a hot summer can overwork the compressor, and a cold winter can make a fridge's thermostat think it's cold enough and stop cooling the freezer. Garage-ready models are rated for a wider range; both Frigidaire freezers here are rated from 0°F to 110°F.[10][11]
- Hot climates (Southwest, Texas, Florida): keep the freezer out of direct sun, leave space behind for airflow, and avoid garages that regularly exceed 110°F. Consider insulating the garage door.
- Cold climates (northern states, mountain areas): confirm the low end of the rating; standard models are designed for indoor temperatures and may stop cooling properly in a cold garage.
- Humid climates: chest freezers build frost faster in humid air, so defrost more often and keep the lid gasket clean.
Whatever the location, keep a thermometer inside: FDA guidance is 40°F or below for the fridge and 0°F for the freezer.[3][4]
Water lines, power and efficiency
- Power: fridges and freezers run on a standard 120V outlet. A dedicated circuit is best, especially in a garage, so a tripped breaker elsewhere doesn't spoil food. Garage outlets usually need GFCI protection under current code; a tripped GFCI can go unnoticed, so check the freezer's light or temperature regularly.
- Water: ice makers and dispensers need a 1/4-inch supply line with a shutoff. A braided stainless or copper line is safer than plastic. Replace the water filter on schedule, usually every six months.
- Efficiency: ENERGY STAR certified refrigerators and freezers beat the federal minimum efficiency standard, and the label is the quickest way to compare running costs. Ice and water dispensers in the door and side-by-side layouts tend to use a little more energy.[1][2]
- Noise: inverter compressors, like the one on the Samsung RF29BB8600, run more steadily and quietly than single-speed compressors.[6]
Warranties compared
| Model | Whole unit | Sealed system / compressor |
|---|---|---|
| Samsung RF29BB8600 | 1 year parts and labor | 5 yr sealed system; 10 yr parts / 5 yr labor on the Digital Inverter Compressor |
| LG LF26C6360S | 1 year parts and labor | Longer compressor coverage; check LG's terms for this model |
| Whirlpool WRS571CIHZ | 1 year limited | See Whirlpool's warranty for sealed-system terms |
| Thermador T30IR905SP | 2 years full | Sealed system parts and labor through year 6, parts through year 12 |
| Frigidaire FFCL1542AW and FFUE2022AW | 1 year parts and labor | See Frigidaire's warranty |
The sealed system (compressor, evaporator, condenser and tubing) is the expensive part to repair, so longer sealed-system coverage matters more than a long whole-unit term. Register the fridge with the maker and keep your receipt.[6][9]
Selling or flipping soon?

FAQ
Is a counter-depth refrigerator worth it?
It's worth it when depth affects your walkway or the look of the kitchen. You'll give up a few cubic feet compared with a standard-depth model of the same width, or pay more for similar capacity. Counter-depth MAX models like the LG LF26C6360S narrow that gap.
French door or side-by-side?
French door fridges have wider shelves and a bigger freezer drawer, which suits most families. Side-by-sides have narrower doors that suit tight kitchens and put frozen food at eye level.
What size refrigerator do I need?
Plan about 4 to 6 cu ft per person. Most families of four do well with 20 to 26 cu ft; add a separate freezer if you buy in bulk.
Can I put a regular freezer in the garage?
Only if the garage stays within the maker's rated range. Garage-ready models such as the Frigidaire FFCL1542AW and FFUE2022AW are rated from 0°F to 110°F.
Chest or upright freezer?
A chest freezer holds more for the money and keeps cold better, but you have to dig and defrost. An upright is easier to organize, and frost-free models don't need defrosting.
Do built-in column refrigerators last longer?
Premium built-ins often carry longer sealed-system warranties; Thermador covers the T30IR905SP sealed system for up to 12 years. They cost much more, so they make the most sense in a remodel you plan to keep.
