Outdoor Sofa and Sectional Buying Guide: Frames, Cushions, Covers and Climate
We may earn a commission if you buy through links on this page.
Premium outdoor sofas run about $2,000 to $8,000, and the photos all look alike. Here are the standout models, then how frame material, cushions, fabric and storage decide whether yours still looks good in year five.
Buy right once: Outdoor sofas fail from the climate, not from sitting. Pick a size for your space and how you entertain, and frame and fabric materials that suit your sun, humidity or salt air, so it still looks good in year five.
Before you buy, check:
- Measured space, with walkways, and the number of seats you need
- Frame material for your climate (aluminum, teak, HDPE)
- Cushion foam, fabric and warranty, plus where you'll store or cover it

Aluminum vs teak vs HDPE vs wicker at a glance
| Powder-coated aluminum | Teak | HDPE lumber (e.g. Polywood) | Resin wicker on aluminum | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Upkeep | Low: wash; touch up chips | Low if you let it go silver; more to keep it golden | Lowest: soap and water | Low: rinse; check the weave |
| Weight / wind | Light; can shift in strong wind | Heavy, stays put | Very heavy, stays put | Light to medium |
| Coastal | Good; won't rust | Good | Good | Good if HDPE weave on aluminum |
| Hot sun | Metal gets hot; coating can chalk over time | Weathers to silver-grey | Handles UV well; pick lighter colors | HDPE holds up; PVC cracks |
| Watch for | Thin tubing, steel hardware | Teak grade, plywood parts | Hard seats; cushions sold separately | PVC weave, steel frames |
For most buyers, a powder-coated aluminum or teak frame with quick-dry foam and solution-dyed acrylic or similar outdoor fabric, plus a plan for covering it, is the low-regret choice. In windy or snowy places, heavier teak or HDPE frames are easier to live with. If you want a woven look, insist on HDPE wicker over an aluminum frame.
Frames: aluminum, teak, HDPE and resin wicker
Powder-coated aluminum
Aluminum can't rust, which makes it the most common premium outdoor frame. Outer, for example, uses powder-coated 6063 aluminum for its aluminum sofas[1]. Quality shows in the wall thickness of the tubing, whether joints are welded rather than bolted, and the hardware. Stainless screws and bolts matter, because steel fasteners can rust and stain even on an aluminum frame. The weak point is the coating: a chip from a dragged chair exposes metal to oxidation and can make the coating lift. Brands that warranty the finish separately from the structure are telling you something: Brown Jordan lists 15 years on aluminum frames including finish peeling or blistering[6], while Sunset West lists 10 years on metal frame structure but 3 years on powder-coat corrosion, peeling or flaking[7].
Teak
Teak is dense and naturally oily, which is why it's been used on boats for centuries. Grade matters: Grade A heartwood is the densest and most oil-rich, while lower grades with more sapwood weather and crack sooner[8]. Ask the brand which grade it uses and whether any parts are plywood or veneer. Untreated teak turns silver-grey within a season or two. That's cosmetic, not rot. If you want to keep the honey color, use a teak sealer. Teak "oils" are less suited outdoors because they can encourage mildew and need frequent reapplication[8]. Teak frames move with humidity, so expect small surface checks, and know that warranties generally exclude weathering and wood movement[3]. Neighbor, for instance, uses FSC-certified teak[2], and Outer gives 10 years on its teak sofas and chairs[1].
HDPE lumber
High-density polyethylene made to look like painted wood, best known from Polywood. It's heavy, doesn't rot or need painting, and cleans with soap and water. Polywood's residential warranty lists 20 years on its HDPE lumber against defects including splintering, cracking, chipping, peeling and rot, but shorter terms on other parts: 5 years on metal frames, hardware and woven inserts, 3 years on sling fabric and 1 year on cushions[4]. Read that as a frame built to last two decades and cushions you should expect to replace sooner.
Resin wicker
All-weather wicker is a synthetic strand woven over a frame. What matters is what the strand is and what's underneath. HDPE wicker with UV stabilizers stays flexible and colorfast much longer. PVC wicker loses plasticizers in heat and sun, then turns brittle and cracks, often within a few seasons[9]. Underneath, aluminum frames can't rust, while steel frames depend on their coating and can rust from the inside at welds and holes[9]. If a listing doesn't say "HDPE" and "aluminum frame," ask.
Cushions: foam and fabric
Foam
Standard upholstery foam is open-cell, but it holds water and dries slowly once soaked. Reticulated or "quick-dry" foam has most of the cell walls removed, so water runs straight through and air dries it[10]. It isn't waterproof, and it only works if the cover, seams and furniture base let water drain out[10]. Neighbor, for example, says its quick-drying foam lets water flow through instead of being trapped, to limit mold and mildew[2]. Quick-dry foam costs more and can feel firmer, so many brands wrap it in fiber or use it only in seats. Outer instead uses a memory-foam cushion protected by its built-in cover[1]. If your sofa will sit uncovered by a pool, in the Southeast or anywhere it rains often, prioritize quick-dry foam. If it lives under a roof, standard foam is fine and often more comfortable.
Fabric
Look for solution-dyed fabric. The color is added to the fiber before it's spun, so it runs all the way through rather than sitting on the surface, which resists fading in sun. Sunbrella is the best-known solution-dyed acrylic. Its upholstery fabrics carry a 5-year limited warranty against loss of color or strength from sunlight, mildew and atmospheric chemicals[5]. Solution-dyed olefin (polypropylene) is a cheaper alternative used by several brands. Outer, for example, uses a solution-dyed olefin it calls OuterWeave[1]. Ask for the fabric's name and maker, and check whether cushion covers zip off for cleaning.
Fabric can't grow mildew on its own, but dirt, pollen and sunscreen on it can. Sunbrella's care guide suggests a solution of 1 cup bleach and 1/4 cup mild soap per gallon of water for mildew, left to soak for 15 minutes, then rinsed well and air-dried[5]. Test colored fabrics from other makers on a hidden spot first.
Cushion construction
- Drainage: mesh panels on the cushion's underside and slatted or webbed sofa bases let water out.
- Welting and seams: double-stitched seams with outdoor-rated thread (often PTFE or polyester) last longer in UV.
- Ties or grippers stop cushions blowing off in wind.
- Replacement: check whether the brand sells replacement cushions and covers. Cushions wear out long before good frames do.
Covers, storage and leaving it out
Even "all-weather" sofas last longer covered. You have three approaches:
- Full furniture covers. Breathable, water-resistant covers sized for your sectional. Lift them now and then so condensation doesn't trap moisture underneath. Frontgate and most premium brands sell fitted covers.
- Built-in cushion covers. Outer's OuterShell is a patented cover built into each cushion that pulls over in seconds against dew, light rain, pollen and debris. Outer says it's water-resistant, not waterproof, and recommends an all-weather cover or moving cushions inside during prolonged rain, storms, heavy snow or seasonal storage[1].
- Cushion storage. A deck box or garage shelf for cushions, with the frame left out. This is the cheapest way to make cushions last.
Waterproof fabric is a fourth option. Frontgate offers Sunbrella Rain on some collections, a waterproof cushion fabric with venting designed to keep the inside dry[11]. It costs more and feels slightly different, but it suits uncovered decks.
Climate notes by region
Southwest and high-altitude sun (UV)
Intense UV is the main enemy. Choose solution-dyed fabric in mid or light colors (dark colors get hot to sit on), HDPE or quality aluminum frames, and HDPE wicker only. Dark metal frames get hot to the touch in full sun. Teak weathers to silver faster in strong sun and can surface-check in very dry air. Store cushions or cover them when you're not using them, since UV degrades thread and foam as well as fabric.
Southeast and Gulf Coast (humidity and mold)
Moisture is the problem. Prioritize quick-dry foam, cushions with mesh drainage panels and a slatted base, and fabric you can clean with a mild bleach solution where the maker allows it[5][10]. Use breathable covers, not plastic tarps, which trap condensation. Raise feet slightly off wet decks if puddling is an issue, and hose off pollen in spring.
Coastal homes (salt air)
Salt corrodes steel quickly and attacks chips in powder coat. Aluminum, teak and HDPE are all good choices. Insist on stainless hardware (316 where the maker offers it), rinse frames with fresh water periodically, and touch up chips right away. Avoid steel frames, including steel hidden inside wicker[9].
Snow country and winter storage
Freeze-thaw is hard on trapped water. Store cushions indoors for winter; even quick-dry foam shouldn't freeze wet. Frames can usually stay out under breathable covers, but don't let snow load sit on covered seats. Water that gets into hollow aluminum or into joints and freezes can split welds, so tip pieces to drain. HDPE and teak handle winter well. Light aluminum pieces can be tipped over by wind, so group or anchor them, or store them.
Windy sites and high decks
Lightweight aluminum sectionals can shift or flip in strong gusts. Heavier teak or HDPE frames, sectional connectors that lock modules together, and cushion ties help. Bring cushions in before storms.

A few things stand out. Frame warranties range from 1 to 20 years depending on brand and material, so they're worth comparing directly. Cushion warranties cluster around 1 to 5 years, and almost every brand excludes fading, weathering, foam softening and normal wear. Read which parts each term covers before deciding a longer number is better.
Sizing, delivery and the details that matter
- Seat depth: deep-seating outdoor sofas often run deeper than indoor ones. Lounging suits a deeper seat, while upright conversation suits a shallower one. Check the seat depth and height in the specs, and add back pillows if a seat is too deep.
- Space: tape the footprint on your patio. Leave about 3 feet for walkways and room for a coffee table within reach. Sectionals need room for the corner piece, which is often deeper than the sides.
- Modularity: modular sectionals let you reconfigure and replace one piece at a time. Check that connectors lock modules together, especially on windy sites.
- Fire features: keep fire pits and fire tables the distance the maker specifies from fabric and cushions, and check local burn rules.
- Delivery and returns: large outdoor pieces often ship as freight with a delivery window, and return shipping can be costly. Read the return policy before ordering, especially on custom fabrics.
- Price: as a rough guide, premium outdoor sofas and sectionals from these brands commonly list from about $2,000 to $8,000 or more depending on size and material, based on brand list prices. Check live prices, and budget for covers and replacement cushions over the life of the frame.

FAQ
What is the best material for an outdoor sofa frame?
Powder-coated aluminum, Grade A teak and HDPE lumber all last well outdoors. Aluminum is light and rust-proof, teak is heavy and naturally weather-resistant, and HDPE is the lowest-maintenance. Avoid steel frames in humid or coastal areas, and choose HDPE wicker over an aluminum frame rather than PVC wicker.
Can outdoor cushions stay outside in the rain?
Some can, if they use quick-dry reticulated foam, drainage mesh and solution-dyed fabric, but they still last longer covered or stored. Standard foam cushions soak up water and can grow mold inside. Store cushions for winter in freezing climates.
Is Sunbrella fabric worth it?
Solution-dyed acrylic like Sunbrella resists fading because the color runs through the fiber, and Sunbrella's upholstery fabric carries a 5-year limited warranty against color and strength loss from sun and mildew. Solution-dyed olefin is a cheaper alternative used by several brands.
How do I stop outdoor cushions from getting moldy?
Choose quick-dry foam and cushions with drainage, let cushions dry before covering them, use breathable covers instead of plastic, and clean off dirt and pollen. Sunbrella suggests a bleach and mild soap solution for mildew on its fabric, followed by a thorough rinse.
Do I need to cover outdoor furniture in winter?
In snowy climates, store cushions indoors and cover frames with breathable covers, or store light aluminum pieces. Teak and HDPE frames generally handle winter outdoors. Tip pieces so water can't sit in joints and freeze.
Does teak need to be oiled?
No. Untreated teak weathers to silver-grey, which is cosmetic. If you want to keep the golden color, use a teak sealer. Oil isn't ideal outdoors because it can promote mildew and needs frequent reapplication.
