Cameras get screwed to the house and wired into the walls. Choose a system with spare channels, storage for the days you want, and power you won't outgrow, so adding a camera later doesn't mean starting over.

Buy right once: Plan for the cameras you'll want in two years, not just the front door. PoE cameras on a recorder have no monthly fee. Cloud doorbells are easier but cost a plan every month.

Before you buy, check:

  • Every door, driveway and side yard you want covered
  • How many days of video you want to keep
  • Doorbell transformer (16–24 VAC) or an Ethernet route

PoE vs Wi-Fi cameras

PoE cameras get power and data over one Ethernet cable to a recorder (NVR) or PoE switch. That means no batteries, no Wi-Fi dropouts and 24/7 local recording. The Reolink RLK8-810B4-A kit pairs four 8MP cameras with an 8-channel NVR and a 2TB drive, so four channels are free for later. Wi-Fi and cloud cameras and doorbells are quicker to install but depend on your Wi-Fi and usually on a monthly plan for recorded video.

How much storage you need

Reolink's formula: hours = drive TB × 8 × 1024³ ÷ (bitrate in kbps × 3,600), counting both the main and sub streams[1]. At the 6,144 kbps default for its 8MP cameras, Reolink's table shows a 2TB drive holds about 8 days of 24/7 video from 4 cameras, and 4 days from 8[1]. Motion-only recording stretches that. Use the calculator above for your setup.

PoE power budgets

Each PoE port has a standard: 802.3af delivers up to 12.95 W at the device, 802.3at (PoE+) 25.5 W and 802.3bt up to 71 W[2]. Reolink's PoE doorbell uses 802.3af[3], and Ring's 4K Pro can run on PoE+[4]. Add up every device's maximum draw from its spec sheet and pick a switch or NVR with a total budget above that.

Doorbell wiring

Wired Nest and Ring doorbells need a 16–24 VAC doorbell transformer rated 10–40 VA[4][5], and Ring recommends 30–40 VA for best performance[4]. Older homes often have a weaker transformer, so check its label before you buy. The Reolink PoE doorbell also takes 12–24 VAC, or runs on PoE where you can bring Ethernet to the door[3].

Subscriptions and privacy

Google says Nest Doorbell event history (30 or 60 days) and 24/7 recording need a Google Home Premium plan[5]. Ring's cloud video needs a Ring Home plan. The Reolink system records to its own drive with no subscription. Whatever you buy, turn on two-factor sign-in for the app, and aim cameras at your property, not into neighbors' windows.

Selling or flipping soon?

  • Wired cameras and doorbells are usually expected to stay; list them in the contract.
  • At closing, factory-reset devices, remove them from your account and leave setup instructions.
  • A video doorbell is a cheap, visible security upgrade for listing photos.

FAQ

How many days will a 2TB drive record?

About 8 days of 24/7 video from four cameras at 6,144 kbps, per Reolink's table. Motion-only recording lasts longer.

Do PoE cameras need a subscription?

No. A PoE system records to its own NVR drive. Cloud cameras and doorbells usually need a monthly plan for recorded video.

Will a video doorbell work with my existing doorbell wires?

Usually, if the transformer is 16–24 VAC and 10–40 VA. Ring recommends 30–40 VA. Check the transformer label.

How many days of 24/7 video your recorder holds, using Reolink's formula.

How it works: Days = TB × 8 × 1024³ ÷ ((main + sub kbps) × cameras × 3,600) ÷ 24. 6,144 kbps is the default main stream on Reolink's 8MP cameras. Motion-only recording lasts longer.

PoE power budget

Add up what your PoE cameras and doorbell draw and check it against the switch or NVR budget.

How it works: Total = cameras × watts + other devices × watts. Per port, IEEE 802.3af delivers up to 12.95 W at the device, 802.3at (PoE+) 25.5 W and 802.3bt up to 71 W.
